Indianapolis, IN: Former Battery Factory Site Protected Against Vapor Intrusion
Vapor Intrusion Specialists is proud to be part of this major redevelopment on the Eastside of Indianapolis. This beautiful industrial building was part of a former battery factory site. After being vacant for approximately 30 years, the building was successfully retrofitted for occupancy that includes a hydroponic produce growing operation among other tenants.
A key part of that process was customizing a system that would keep harmful vapors from the ground out of the building. After reviewing the data collected on vapor types and levels and collaborating with the primary environmental remediation company over the project, it was determined that 3 sub-slab depressurization systems (SSDS) with 2 different types fans and 17 vapor extraction points. Each extraction point has a monitor to allow for calibration and ongoing monitoring of the system’s depressurization, and each of the three systems has a vacuum alarm to promptly notify key personnel of a system power failure.
This project included cleaning and sealing floor drains and grates and sealing any wall joints or foundation cracks larger than 1/4”. Vapor Intrusion Specialists worked with a licensed roofer for carefully sealing where the vapor intrusion system had outlets through the roof and a licensed electrician for hardwiring the fans.
The proper architecture and meticulous installation of a complex vapor intrusion mitigation system helped position this old building for successful reuse and to attract tenants who could be now be confident of having clean indoor air.
